This pin was originally available as a prize in a competition, which was held in participating stores all across Japan between the 16th November 2002 and the 15th January 2003.

Participants in the competitions would compete in a game of Mario Party 4. At the end of the game, the winner was awarded with this Mario pin (along with several other prizes).

The pin is made of metal with enamel colourings. The metal is a very shiny gold colour, but I've made it look black in the pictures below to try and show the details in the pin better.
